Frequently Asked Questions
A honed finish is a distinct matte or satin appearance applied to natural stone, including marble, dolomite, and limestone. Unlike a polished finish, the honing process stops before the stone becomes glossy, resulting in a smooth, velvety surface with minimal light reflection. This gives the stone a softer, more natural, and understated look that many of our clients at Art of Marble prefer for its sophisticated appeal.
A honed finish provides a subtle yet highly sophisticated aesthetic that beautifully complements a wide array of design styles, from minimalist and contemporary to rustic and traditional. It offers a more understated elegance, softening the appearance of intricate veining and colours. This creates a less formal and often more inviting space, allowing the inherent beauty and texture of the stone to shine through in a non-reflective, natural way.
While a honed finish can make minor scratches and etching less noticeable as there's no high shine to dull, it typically leaves the stone slightly more porous than a polished finish. This increased porosity means honed surfaces may require more frequent sealing to adequately prevent staining and moisture absorption. However, with proper maintenance and diligent care, honed stone offers excellent durability for long-term use. Art of Marble provides specific sealing and maintenance recommendations for each stone type.
A honed finish is generally more susceptible to staining because its more open pores allow liquids to penetrate more easily if the stone is not properly sealed. While it doesn't show etching (dull spots from acid exposure) as prominently as a polished surface (because there's no reflective shine to etch), etching still occurs.
